The Moses Mabhida Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium

The Moses Mabhida Stadium  by GMP Architekten is located in a sporting precinct in Durban on the shore of the Indian ocean and features a 105-metre arch that rises over the circular stadium. The arch is connected by cable system to the external edges of the roof, carrying the weight of the roof’s inner membrane.

ETH Robot Built Pavilion

This shingled timber pavilion was created by masters students on ETH Zurich’s Digital Fabrication course, who developed robotic fabrication techniques to minimise the waste involved in its construction.

Milan’s Vanke Pavilion

Yama Karim, Principal at Studio Libeskind, talks to BuiltWorlds about the challenges and the design process for the Vanke Pavilion in Milan, Italy. The pavilion was created for Chinese real estate developer Vanke for the 2015 Milan Expo.

The Navicula Light

Navicula is derived from nature, in this case from one of the many microscopic diatoms that float around in the oceans. The flowing, segmented form is shipped as kitset and assembled on site with push-in nylon clips. The thin curved pieces of CNC-cut bamboo plywood create a flowing structure

Reebok’s 3D Technology

Reebok is using 3D technology to break the mold. Bloomberg’s Anne Mostue visited the Boston-based company’s headquarters to see how it’s using proprietary liquid material, software and robotics to draw shoes in three-dimensional layers

Geodesic Sphere Puzzle

If you want to build this: two chunks of 2×4 that were each 20″ long were cut. These were then ripped into 14 strips, which were eventually cut in half. Of these 28 total pieces, 18 were used for hexagonal and 10 were used for pentagonal tubes.

Ultra Thin Concrete Roof

Researchers from ETH Zurich have built a prototype of an ultra-thin, curved concrete roof using innovative digital design and fabrication methods. The tested novel formwork system will be used in an actual construction project.

Burnham Centennial Pavilion

The Burnham Centennial Committee, in collaboration with City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Millenium Park Inc. and The Art Institute of Chicago, selected Pritzker Prize winning Zaha Hadid Architects to design a pavilion to commemorate the centennial of Burnham’s Plan for Chicago.

Conduit Climbing Frame

Bit of a redesign and build of a geodesic climbing frame by Paul Robinson, most half sphere climbing frames are a bit low to the ground so the designer made this one more of a sphere to get a better vertical climbing area on the sides of the dome.

Thin Shell Structures

Sigrid Adriaenssens and Branko Glisic co-taught a course on German thin-shell structures at Princeton University that has resulted in a new exhibit, “Evolution of German Shells: Efficiency in Form.” The exhibit is on view on the Princeton campus in the Friend Center Engineering Library.

Voxel Chair

A continuous line of plastic makes up this intricate robot-built chair, designed using a new 3D-printing software by a team from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. The Bartlett’s Design Computation Lab (DCL), a part of University College London, created the software to open up new possibilities for 3D printing.

The ZCB Bamboo Pavilion

The ZCB Bamboo Pavilion is a public event space built for the Construction Industry Council’s Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) in the summer of 2015 in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong.

Architectural Cladding System

German engineer Stefan Lehnert has pioneered the use of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene ─ a highly durable, light and adaptable plastic ─ in architecture. The roof and cladding system he invented, based on plastic cushions filled with air, is energy efficient and able to withstand high impact.
