If a user stands still for a long enough period of time, the petals will retract into the completed surface.

Meta Parametric Design

Meta Parametric Design

In this article the authors: John E. Harding and Paul Shepherd, propose a new approach called Meta-Parametric Design, combining graph-based parametric modelling with genetic programming. The advantages of this approach are demonstrated using two real case-study projects

3D Printed Jewelry

3D Printed Jewelry

Dutch designer elleke van gorsel, founder of studio-eposh designed 3D printed delft blue jewelry collection. Each design is printed and hand-dyed and finished by the designer. Like other studio-eposh products, ‘delft blue’ is 100% sourced and locally made in the Netherlands.

Voussoir Cloud Parametric Pavilion

Voussoir Cloud

The overall design draws from the work of engineer/architects such as Frei Otto and Antonio Gaudi, who used hanging chain models to find efficient form.

Light Pollination Installation

Light Pollination Installation

Commissioned by iGuzzini, Light Pollination consists of 20,000 LED lights embedded on the ends of fibre-optic cables. These gently pulse with light to mimic the phenomenon of bioluminescence in nature.

Palmas Origami Vase

Palmas

Palmas is a vase collection made of concrete, each casted into a hand folded origami mold.  Each pattern consists of 150-250 molecules, according to its height. The origami mold has a one-time use only, once the concrete hardens inside it, the paper is peeled off.

Minimal Complexity Installation

Minimal Complexity

Romanian architect Vlad Tenu was awarded for his project ‘Minimal Complexity’ which along with its aesthetic beauty, technical superiority and elegance of detailing, the proposal was chosen because it employs structural robustness, material efficiency and an inherent logic of assembly.

Generative Tessellations

Generative Tessellations

This thesis by Sara Torki Baghbadorani focuses on surface articulation of a shell structure constructed through a generative, parametric, modular design process. The shell form uses vault topology that adapts to varying site conditions such as topography and shape and that serves as contemplative space.

Tear Parametric Pendant Lamp

Tear

Tear is a parametric wooden floor and pendant lamp designed by Imajine (Jaejin Lee) using a CNC Machine and Birch plywood.

BIOSTAGOG Interactive Sculpture

BIOSTAGOG

Designed by Platige Image and Bridge, BIOSTAGOG is an interactive sculpture that combines algorithmic design, 3D printing, mapping and interaction. BIOSTAGOG was created to be a living organism in the lobby of Platige that takes an active part in the company’s everyday life.

Parametric Shoes

Parametric Shoes

The process of design had on the one hand, the contribution of the creative shoe-designer Alessio Spinelli, on the other hand, the technical know-how of the team of architects Maurizio Arturo Degni and Arturo Tedeschi. The aim was to introduce the technology in the creative method.

Parametric Interior

Parametric Interior

Archistroj design studio has recently completed the interior design project of an apartment in Prague. The parametric interior of the apartment is optimized using algorithms based on the user’s lifestyle. The resulting design is particularly interpreted through organically shaped build-in furniture.

ColorFolds Parametric Design

ColorFolds

As part of two NSF funded projects in the Sabin Design Lab at Cornell University, eSkin and KATS, ColorFolds is one product of ongoing trans-disciplinary research spanning across the fields of cell biology, materials science, physics, electrical and systems engineering, and architecture.

Kirigami Tessellations

Kirigami Tessellations

In this article authors pose and solve the inverse problem of determining the number, size and orientation of cuts that enables the deployment of a closed, compact regular kirigami tessellation to conform approximately to any prescribed target shape in two or three dimensions.

Origami Mechanical Materials

Origami Mechanical Materials

This book contains articles exploring subjects like: origami structures, origami tessellations, modular metamaterials, topological kinematics of origami metamaterials, topological mechanics of origami and kirigami and so on.

Poroso wooden block aggregation

Poroso

Poroso by Emerging Objects is an experiment in block aggregation using a specially formulated wood material. The wood has a higher accuracy and finer finish. It is also stronger and more easily able to be excavated from the print bed.

3D Printed Glove

3D Printed Glove

Engineers from Jaguar Land Rover are working on the next generation of protective workplace clothing – a lightweight 3D-printed glove which could help better protect employees from the threat of a musculoskeletal disorder.

Self-Deploying Origami

Self-Deploying Origami

This study by Kazuya Saito, Akira Tsukahara and Yoji Okabe presents a new method for designing self-deploying origami using the geometrically misaligned creases. In this method, some facets are replaced by ‘holes’ such that the systems become a 1-d.f. mechanism.

Pixel Wall Parametric Design and Fabrication

Pixel Wall

The “pixel wall” is composed of laser cut plates. Using parametric design and digital fabrication techniques, this flexible self-supporting wall has low cost and reduced environmental impact. This project is being developed by researchers from Chile and Brazil.

Museum of the Future

Museum of the Future

Designed by Killa Design and scheduled to open in 2019, the Museum of the Future will take a torus shape, a gleaming silver oval with an open center. The building looks almost like an eye keeping watch over this growing city, the largest in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

3D Printed Geodesic Dome

Geodesic Dome

+LAB is the new 3D printing lab of Politecnico of Milan. Their team is composed by designers and engineers conducting academic research on this amazing technology! This geodesic dome is an example, designed and fabricated by them.

Geometry and Performance of Timber Gridshells

Timber Gridshells

This thesis by Dragos-Iulian Naicu, upon reviewing the design and construction processes of previous timber gridshells, puts forward a structural model that aims to represent the true nature and specifics of single and double- layered timber gridshells.
