Surface Bridge Mesh

In this Grasshopper Python script, you can connect two surfaces with random or line-controlled mesh tunnels.

PH SCRIPT 013 – SURFACE BRIDGE MESH

PURPOSE
Make a connected mesh from two NURBS surfaces with sculpted bridge tunnels.
Choose random placement or draw lines to place and pair tunnel entrances.

INPUTS
Surface A / Surface B: Two untrimmed, four-sided surface patches with
matching overall proportions and corresponding corners.

Bridge Lines: Optional straight lines spanning Surface A to Surface B.
Each endpoint sets one opening center; the line pairs those two openings.
Either line direction works. Empty = random mode.

Bridges: Number of tunnels in random mode, 1 to 10. Ignored with lines.

Opening Size: Diameter and spacing of the openings, 0.5 to 2.0.

Bridge Shift: 0 pairs opposite openings; 1 allows strong diagonal connections
between openings at different heights. Random mode only.

Seed: Change the random arrangement. Random mode only.

OUTPUTS
Bridge Mesh: One connected quad mesh with matching openings on both sheets.

Outer Edges: The two original outer boundaries, retained as naked mesh edges.

Opening Edges: Closed curves at both ends of every tunnel; useful as feature curves when remeshing.
Status: Actual count and diagnostic information.

NOTES
– The outer edges stay open so the mesh can be used as interior architecture.

– The tunnel and sheet vertices share indices; no overlapping duplicate faces.

– Surfaces are matched by their four corners, including flipped UV directions.

– Line endpoints project to the surfaces and snap to the nearest mesh grid cell.

– Lines too close to an outer edge, another opening or another tunnel are skipped.

– Inspect strongly folded surfaces and crossing or crowded lines.

– Trimmed surfaces, mismatched topology and intersecting sheets are unsupported.

– Use Outer Edges and Opening Edges as guides in your downstream remesh.
