Kinetic Architecture

Kinetic Architecture

If the ongoing tech revolution has taught us anything, it’s that people want flexibility and high adaptability, and that mindset has affected all aspects of our lives. So, it seems that the next logical step is to make our buildings flexible enough to suit our needs.

Nervous System & Growing Designs with Shapeways 3D Printing

Growing Designs

Nervous System is a design studio that works at the intersection of science, art, and technology. We create using a novel process that employs computer simulation to generate designs and digital fabrication to realize products.

Deployable Structures

Deployable Structures

Deployable structures are a good example of a dynamic parametric design! A short video highlighting some of the first-semester work at University of Westminster School of Architecture.

Evolution Door

Evolution Door

This Kinetic art object based on rotating squares by Klemens Torggler is a good example of how a parametric designed object can be used in our homes

Metamaterial Mechanisms

Metamaterial Mechanisms

A parametric design for Metamaterials. Metamaterial Mechanisms is a research project from the Hasso Plattner Institute.A metamaterial is a material engineered to have a property that is not found in nature.

Design a wooden lamp

Design a wooden lamp

Design process / Design wooden lamps build by cnc router. Supercone wood lamps. Design Lampen / Fräsen von Teilen für Designerlampen.

4D-printing with heat

4D-printing with heat

Researchers have created a series of 4D-printed plastic objects that fold themselves into predetermined shapes when heated, which they believe could be scaled up to create flat-pack furniture.

Making of Zome Lamp

Making of Zome Lamp

Making of Zome lamp, behind the scenes of this fabulous design piece, fragile yet strong. The ethereal ZOME consists of identical fluid vermiforms – a sequence of dots that create a beautiful atmospheric lighting piece when assembled

MegaFaces - The Making of the Kinetic Facade

MegaFaces

The making of the kinetic facade of the MegaFaces pavilion at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

dreizehngrad Swing

dreizehngrad Swing

Manufacturing of a pendant lamp from the collection Swing: lovingly handcrafted by the designers from dreizehngrad

Kinetic window blinds

Kinetic window blinds

At the time when he was an architecture student, Tyler Short developed a kinetic blinds concept that follows the sun throughout the day.

Schüco Parametric Concept

Schüco Parametric Concept

Parametric 3D façade concept for individual architectural solutions. For the first time, a complex façade geometry is possible with standardised profiles and connectors.

Santiago Calatrava - models in motion

Models in motion

Santiago Calatrava’s exhibition at Georgia Tech brings together a unique selection of models, as well as architectural and artistic drawings that display the conception and design of 13 selected projects from around the world and in the USA.

VUW - ABB Robot Builds Parametric Wall

Latest explorations in testing the ABB IRB6700-200 Robot named Lola.

Pipe Geometric Lamp

Pipe Geometric Lamp

What we need: 4.5 m of copper pipe with a diameter of 15 mm cut into 30 pieces of 15 cm,15 m of copper wire with a cross section of 2 mm

The Future of Building Design

There is a shift in thinking about how cities are being planned and built. Generative design and robotics help pull a design from a digital model to a real-world finished artifact.

Robotic Trimming

Parametrichouse: Recently we assisted RMIT’s Spacial Information Architecture Laboratory with some work to their prototype pods! All these uniquely shaped oculi are all formed with the same mould then individually robotically trimmed (SprutCAM Robot) following a mathematically calculated curve to precisely fit the sheet metal frame when distorted!

Flagellum Protein Motor

Flagellum Protein Motor

The bacterial flagellum has become an iconic example of the evidence against modern Darwinian theory as well as the evidence for intelligent design. Stephen Meyer, Scott Minnich and others scientists and scholars explore the facts about this amazing piece of nanotechnology, first made famous by biologist Michael Behe.

Spider Bracket Structure

Spider Bracket Structure

Altair, Materialise and Renishaw collaborated to successfully create a lattice structured spider bracket; a functional structure which is lightweight, robust and reminds biological lifeforms. The design for the spider bracket was generated using Altair OptiStruct, prepared for printing with Materialise software Magics, 3-matic and the Build Processor, to be 3D printed on Renishaw’s AM250 metal additive manufacturing system.

Bionic Vaulted Structures

Bionic Vaulted Structures

Dr. Mirtsch Wölbstrukturierung GmbH in Berlin has developed an innovative process for producing vaulted materials. The bionic structure is relatively easy to install in metals. The sheet metal is rolled over a mill equipped with lined braces. The varying levels of pressure cause the metal to ‘plop in’.
