Nail Sculptures

Nail Sculptures

Created by John Bisbee, the nail sculptures come in many shapes and sizes. Some form delicate walls while others are simply nailed to the wall. About his nail sculptures, Bisbee tells American Craft, “A nail, like a line, can and will do almost anything. What can’t you draw with a line? The nail is just my line.”

Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence has a bold and cloud-like architecture.

Algorithmic Architectural Forms

Algorithmic Architectural Forms

This paper presents a methodology and software tools for parametric design of complex architectural objects, called digital or algorithmic forms. In order to provide a flexible tool, the proposed design philosophy involves two open source utilities Donkey and MIDAS written in Grasshopper algorithm editor and C++.

Robot Built House

Robot Built House

Researchers from Switzerland’s ETH Zurich university will use robots and 3D printers to design and build a pioneering three-storey house at a local research and innovation campus. Eight professors from ETH Zurich are working with business partners to build the DFAB House.

Constraints And Optimization

This book by Amit Zoran contains subjects like parametric design space, introduction to optimization, introduction to gradient descent, grasshopper galapagos and examples for genetic algorithms in parametric design.

Snapping Mechanical Metamaterials

Snapping Metamaterials

In this video by Ahmad Rafsanjani you can see snapping mechanical metamaterials under tension. The response of highly deformable architectures can be programmed to impart a series of desirable functionalities, such as extraordinary geometric changes and conformational rearrangements.

Change In Parametric Design

Change In Parametric Design

With respect to evolutionary search and optimization, this article by Robert Vierlinger and Klaus Bollinger investigates aspects of flexibility and performance on the levels of fast application and open representation.

Qatar National Convention Center

Qatar Convention Center

Gigantic tree-like columns support the overhanging roof of the Qatar National Convention Centre by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The building was designed by Arata Isozaki to reference the Sidrat al-Muntaha, a holy Islamic tree that is believed to symbolise the end of the seventh heaven.

Tangible Means Knowledge through Materials

Tangible Means

With this document edited by Anne Louise Bang, Jacob Buur, Irene Alma Lønne and Nithikul Nimkulrat, authors wish to explore different ways in which experiential knowledge through materials can be given more appropriate consideration within the framework of research.

Ada Interactive Pavilion

Ada

In collaboration with microsoft research, artist-in-residence jenny sabin has designed the ‘ada’ installation for the tech company’s redmond campus. The work takes its name from ada lovelace, mathematician who is often credited as one of the first computer programmer.

Kinetic Sculpture Orbs

Kinetic Sculpture Orbs

New York City-based design studio Hypersonic teamed up with Plebian Design to create a standalone system of 804 orange spheres which rise and fall in a concerted visual representation of how, within the perceived chaos of data sets, natural patterns eventually reveal themselves.

Parakeet Plugin Grasshopper Definition

Truncated Hexa

In this grasshopper definition you can create a Truncated hexagonal grid and then add a pattern to it. You can rotate or scale the pattern with a point attractor and then finally offset the curves.

The Mandelbrot Set

The Mandelbrot Set

Mandelbrot set, a famous fractal that is a badge of honor for mathematicians. One way of defining the Mandelbrot set is by looking at how complex functions behave under repeated iteration.

Landscape Parametric Modeling

Landscape Parametric Modeling

This thesis by Stuart Mackenzie Jones gives an overview of parametric tools and parametric thinking, and describes how parametric tools are being applied to the design of the built environment and landscape systems.

UGEARS Mechanical Models

UGEARS

UGears is the creator and manufacturer of unique self-propelled mechanical model kits designed for self-assembly without glue and made entirely of high-grade wooden material.

Recursive Morph grasshopper3d pufferfish plugin

Recursive Morph

In this definition we have used the Pufferfish’s “Recrusive Morph Mesh” to produce patterns on a mesh. This component Recursively morphs mesh geometries onto a base mesh.

Robotic Construction

Robotic Construction

This research by Steven Robert Janssen catalogues robotic construction technology currently being used by architects and discusses the motivations that drive architects to use this technology. This catalogue includes an interview with architect Dr Simon Weir and investigates his motivation for using robotic construction technologies.

Reaction Diffusion Pattern

Reaction Diffusion Pattern

In Kouhei Nakama’s production, Diffusion, programming is used to generate patterns on a human form. The central question is “Why do humans not have patterned skin like animals?”. To explore this concept, Nakama implements reaction-diffusion algorithms to generate patterns that resemble those found in plants and animals.

Tensile Kangaroo

In this grasshopper example file, you can model a parametric tensile structure by using the Kangaroo2 Plugin. The corners of the mesh has been used as the anchors.

Mozi Arm Spinner

Mozi Arm Spinner

This spinner toy by Mozi slips over your arms and spins in mesmerizing patterns across it. Roll it from arm to arm or friend to friend. Then, once it’s made its rounds, just fold it flat by turning it counterclockwise between your hands. Its smooth, caterpillar-like movement works best on bare skin.

Material That Matter

Material That Matter

This thesis by Andrea Minuto will introduce you to a vision called Smart Material Interfaces (SMIs), which takes advantage of the new generation of engineered materials. They are capable of changing their physical properties, such as shape, size, and color, and can be controlled by using certain stimuli.

Branched Scissor Mechanisms

Scissor Mechanisms

Henry Segerman is putting a new spin on the subject with his emphasis on mathematical art. Instead of teaching math the old-fashioned way (i.e. boring old pen and paper), Segerman makes use of 3D printing videos to illustrate how mathematical concepts like geometry and symmetry work.
